Bio:

Mario Schaarschmidt holds the chair for business informatics and application management at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He studied computer science with an application in business informatics (Dipl.-Inf.) and completed his doctorate with a Dr. rer. pol. with a thesis on the role of companies in the creation of open source software at the University of Koblenz-Landau. There he also worked as a junior professor for technology and innovation management and was both a senior member of the Institute for Web Science and Technologies (WeST) and deputy director of the university-wide Institute for Scientific Entrepreneurship and International Transfer (ZIfET). Further academic positions include substitute professorships at the University of Cologne and the University of Paderborn as well as stays abroad at the Harvard Kennedy School, University College Cork and the University of Exeter. Before his engagement at the University of Duisburg-Essen, he was Senior Lecturer in Business Analytics and Digital Marketing at the Amsterdam Campus of Newcastle Business School, Northumbria University.

Prof. Dr. Schaarschmidt brings practical experience through freelance consulting work and his time as Senior Vice President Sales at Groupon Deutschland GmbH. He also led a number of funded projects in collaboration with practice partners. In total, he was involved in raising over 2.7 million euros, mainly awarded by the BMBF and BMWi (EXIST). In his research he focuses on both technical and behavioral aspects of digital innovations. He therefore teaches and researches in particular on the topics of digital services, open source software, modern software development and sustainability.
