Visiting Scholar Academy

Internationally renowned scientists in Essen

The Visiting Scholar Academy invites internationally renowned scientists to the University of Duisburg-Essen every year to examine current topics from the most diverse areas of Business Information Systems together with students. In addition to the opportunity to discuss selected topics of Business Information Systems with internationally recognized experts in the respective field, students also have the opportunity to become acquainted with other forms of teaching, such as those practiced in the USA in the form of "case study teaching". In addition, students gain an insight into the international network of scientists who work together with researchers from the University of Duisburg-Essen on current topics in Business Information Systems.

The Visiting Scholar Academy began in the summer semester 2016 with the visit of Prof. Dr. Ulrike Schultze from the Business School of Southern Methdoist Unviersity in Texas. In a two-week block event entitled Effecting Business Performance with Business Analytics, Prof. Schultze and Master students of Business Information Systems worked out how to introduce business analytics systems in companies so that they can fully unfold their impact. In addition to the critical success factors, it was also discussed how working practices and the perception of decision-makers are changing. The offer was rounded off by exercises, which thematize the introduction of Business Analytics systems on the basis concrete software products such as Tableau or R. Since summer semester 2016, we have been offering every summer an a Visiting Scholar Academy, at which we welcomed Prof. Steven Alter from the University of San Francisco and Karlheinz Kautz from the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology.
