Opening Ruhr Symposium 2024 on AI for Functional Materials
Professor Dr. Frederik Ahlemann had the pleasure of opening the Ruhr Symposium 2024. This year’s theme, “AI for Functional Materials,” gathered experts from academia and industry to discuss the transformative role of artificial intelligence in materials science.
In his keynote, "The Underestimated Revolution: On the Transformative Power of AI and Our Struggle to Understand It", Prof. Ahlemann highlighted the profound changes AI is driving across industries and emphasized the importance of addressing human factors, such as biases, to ensure AI’s effective application in materials science.
Furthermore, an industry keynote was delivered by Dr. Henrik Hahn, Chief Digital Officer at Evonik, titled "How Can Artificial Intelligence Make Specialty Chemicals Smarter and Faster?". Dr. Hahn outlined how AI accelerates the development of specialty chemicals, stressing AI’s role in enhancing innovation and efficiency.
The symposium’s sessions focused on three key areas:
- Data Management: Dr. Ahmed Mansour from Humboldt University and Dr. Dagmar Dirzus from KROHNE discussed strategies and challenges related to AI-driven data frameworks in material sciences.
- Automation of Material Processes: Prof. Dr. Thomas Kirchartz, a CENIDE member, and Florian Huber from hte GmbH presented how AI enhances experimental workflows, particularly in solar cell research and materials development.
- Materials Informatics: Yixuan Zhang from TU Darmstadt and Dr. Tian Xie from Microsoft Research showcased cutting-edge AI methods for designing materials, including the use of generative models for microstructure reconstruction.
The 2024 Ruhr Symposium illustrated the powerful potential of AI in material sciences and underscored the shared responsibility of academia and industry in guiding its responsible and effective application.
