The influence of digital technologies on business and society is omnipresent. At the same time, humanity faces major challenges that require urgent action and innovation.

Under the slogan “Towards X Futures,” our working group reflects on the connections between digital and socio-ecological transformation. As the head of Place Beyond Bytes at the University of Duisburg-Essen, we are also responsible for supporting digital start-up projects at the university. We directly support the development of digital products and services and research their economic, ecological, and social impact.

In the “Building Bridges” project, we strengthen the educational participation of girls of color from the 10th grade onwards through empowerment and mentoring. To this end, we are developing a smart service system that encompasses the participatory creation of a context-sensitive modular system for digital storytelling based on the action design research approach. This “living platform” serves to promote anti-racist education, mentoring, and context-sensitive storytelling for BIPOC and FLINTA communities*. The platform is based on web technologies and AI applications and is to be designed as a participatory infrastructure in collaboration with the communities.
