About us

With more than 274,0000 students in more than 600 courses of study at 22 universities, the Ruhr area is one of the densest but also youngest educational landscapes in Europe. As part of this educational landscape, we have been researching and teaching the possible uses of information technology in companies for over twenty years with over 30 employees in seven research groups. We are supported by over 20 other research groups that conduct research and teach in the fields of business administration, economics and computer science. In addition to organisational questions on the strategic orientation of IT and the possibilities of decision support, our research also addresses technical topics that deal with the implementation and integration of operational information systems. In addition, we also offer our more than 1,400 students skills for setting up companies, so that our research and graduates will continue to help organizations safely into a digital future in the future.
Prof. Dr. Frederik Ahlemann
Chair of Information Systems and Strategic IT Management

We shape the digital future of organizations: strategically, practically, and with a special focus on the people behind the technology. At the Chair of Business Information Systems and Strategic IT Management, we research how technology is transforming the world of work and organizations. We are interested in increasing productivity, innovation, and success. Not one-sidedly, but always with consideration for the well-being and performance of the people affected. We are currently applying this perspective to the fields of IT management, urban IT systems, and IT systems for knowledge workers.
In our projects, we develop models, methods, and digital tools that don't end up in a drawer, but have an impact in practice. We are driven by the conviction that excellent research not only describes problems, but creates concrete solutions. Sustainable impact arises where science and practice work together on equal terms, and where new ideas are not just conceived but implemented together.
If you want to understand how IT really works today and what it might look like tomorrow, you've come to the right place.
Prof. Dr. Stefan Eicker
Chair of Information Systems and Software Engineering

The Chair of Business Informatics and Software Engineering (SOFTEC) under the leadership of Prof. Dr. Stefan Eicker addresses both central issues of business informatics and emerging topics in research and teaching. The chair focuses on three research areas: Generative AI and Agentic IS, Digital Platform Ecosystems, and Smart Energy. In the area of Artificial Intelligence, we combine organizational, technical, and user-centered perspectives to design the next generation of information systems.
In the focus on Digital Platform Ecosystems, we examine how the tension between control and openness of platforms and ecosystems can be addressed in a design-oriented manner and what impact this has on value creation. In the area of Smart Energy, we create digital solutions for the energy transition, particularly for modeling energy systems, peer-to-peer energy trading, and the flexibilization of energy-intensive industrial processes.
Our fundamental objective is the development of socio-technical artifacts in all areas to solve domain-specific challenges in the corresponding action systems. In doing so, we rely on the combination of conceptual, empirical, and computationally intensive methods, primarily guided from a scientific perspective by the design science research paradigm.
Prof. Dr. Mario Nadj
Chair of Information Systems and AI in Marketing

Whether in marketing, production, or corporate innovation – the potential applications of artificial intelligence (AI) are diverse. For example, it can automate decisions and processes or uncover complex relationships. At the same time, its use entails risks that can cause significant damage not only to the reputation and profitability of companies, but also to individuals and society: Deepfakes, discrimination, or a lack of transparency are just a few of the problem areas.
Companies must therefore not only use AI responsibly but also approach it critically. The Chair of Information Systems & AI in Marketing, headed by Prof. Dr. Mario Nadj, examines from a socio-technical perspective how AI systems can be developed, evaluated, and deployed in a robust, fair, transparent, and trustworthy manner in various application contexts.
Our research combines technical innovation with social relevance – and offers a wide range of opportunities for students, practitioners, and interdisciplinary research collaborations.
Prof. Dr. Ralf Plattfaut
Chair of Information Systems and Transformation Management

In the research group Information Systems and Transformation Management (Prof. Dr. Ralf Plattfaut), we investigate the interplay of digital technology and organizational transformation with regard to effectively shaping digital transformation. We take a holistic view of organizations – from processes to business models to leadership and management styles.
Shaped by a strong information technology perspective, we focus on the socio-technical interplay of humans and technology as manifested in business processes. Our interdisciplinary team from business informatics, management, psychology, and sociology conducts practice-oriented research with direct benefits for society and companies, with our research projects concentrating on three closely linked levels:
A) How can digital transformation be managed to leverage technologies for innovations and competitive advantages?
B) How can automation and analytics technologies, such as process mining, be used to improve and optimize business processes?
C) How can (lightweight) technologies, such as robotic process automation (RPA), be used to optimize value for the business?
Prof. Dr. Hannes Rothe
Chair of Sustainability and Innovation in Digital Ecosystems

Prof. Dr. Hannes Rothe is the holder of the Chair for Sustainability and Innovation in Digital Ecosystems at the Rhine-Ruhr Institute for Information Systems at the University of Duisburg-Essen. He leads the Co-Creation Lab 'Place Beyond Bytes' where members of UDE develop digital products and services. His research group investigates the intersections of Digital Innovation & Entrepreneurship, the management of digital ecosystems, and the organization of data and knowledge.
The group coordinates several project consortia, such as those focusing on startups with AI, in health data spaces, or sustainable technologies. The research findings of the group are published in leading journals in business informatics and strategic management, including Information Systems Research [A+], Strategic Management Journal [A+], Journal of the Association for Information Systems [A], European Journal on Information Systems [A], or Information Systems Journal [A].
In education, the working group is committed to sustainable impact through digital innovations as well as entrepreneurial thinking and actions with digital technologies. To this end, it coordinates the Master's program in Sustainable Innopreneurship.
Prof. Dr. Mario Schaarschmidt
Chair of Information Systems and Application Management

The Chair of Business Informatics and Application Management deals with the scientific investigation of central topics related to application management. Application management here encompasses a wide range of the use and creation of apps, application landscapes, and platforms.
Special attention is paid to the areas of digital services, open-source software, open data, modern software development, and sustainability. Our goal is to connect theoretical concepts with practical applications and to achieve both scientific and application-oriented advancements. Therefore, we work closely with practice partners and academic institutions to develop relevant and innovative insights and solutions.
The research results of the working group are published in leading journals in business informatics, software engineering, and general business administration, including the British Journal of Management, Empirical Software Engineering, European Journal on Information Systems, Journal of Interactive Marketing, Journal of Management Information Systems, and Journal of Service Research. For further information about our research projects, publications, and collaboration opportunities, we are at your disposal.
Prof. Dr. Reinhard Schütte
Chair of Information Systems and Integrated Information Systems

The chair focuses on the design of application systems and organizations, taking research findings into account. Our work addresses the core of the cognitive and design problem: How do IT systems in general, and enterprise systems as a specific system type in particular, function in companies?
As part of our research and teaching efforts, we investigate the interdependencies between the organization and the application systems used. In this context, we address the concept of digitalization and the associated opportunities and challenges for companies, and especially for IT.
